These chicks are flown direct to Homer so they arrive at our store between 24 and 36 hours after hatch, compared with the 60-72 hours through the post office.  This gives them a much higher survival rate.

The earliest documentation of this breed was in 15th century Europe, but the bird we know today was bred for refined color and crest in the 18th century. Polish are docile, light weight, somewhat skittish birds. They are non-broody and prefer warm, dry climates. Due to their small stature, they do not do well in the cold but need shade in extreme heat. They are prone to illness if their head gets wet for long periods of time. Polish are adored for their “afro heads”, but because of this have poor vision and are easy prey for predators. They are low on the pecking order and can be subject to bullying in community flocks. The head of a hen has more of a “pom pom” shape while a rooster is more of a “mop”. All varieties of this breed have gray legs and unique “V-shaped” combs. From day old chick to adult, Polish make an interesting topic of conversation.
