You have seen one of these beauties at Bear Creek Winery in Homer.  It is a slow growing Maple with a dense, oval canopy of glossy maroon foliage turning bright red in fall. Prefers a moist, well-drained soil. Prune in summer, in full leaf, to avoid excessive bleeding.
